avid reader wanna-be

this morning it was brought to my attention that it is assumed that the books listed in the “on my nightstand” list are being read by me simultaneously. considering the fact that the three listed are only a few of the volumes stacked one atop the other next to my bed, i should probably note which book i am actually reading.

at the current time, i am making my way slowly through love you, mean it. written by four women widowed by the september 11 attacks, the book is about the bond they forged as a result of that horrific experience. it is not one that is easy to read, nor should it be. but whenever i get around to reading, i either have five minutes before i have to head off to something else, or i am in bed, and i fall asleep before i can turn the page.

thomas merton’s no man is an island was given to me for christmas last year. i am contemplating putting aside love you, mean it for the next week or so and doing an intensive reading of merton’s book so i can discuss it over thanksgiving with my sister-in-law heidi, who gave it to me.

barack obama’s dreams from my father is one i have wanted to read for a while. i will get to it when i can.

there are other books on my nightstand, but they have been buried for so long below the books i really want to read that i can’t even remember right now what they are.

what books are you reading?

My reading goes in spurts. I feel like when I'm on a reading spurt, I'll read 3-4 really good books in a row, then nothing for awhile. Right now I'm reading a Jacqueline Mitchard book, but I'm not totally hooked yet so it's pretty easy to leave it sit on the nightstand. Wish every book could be as gripping and as page turning as the rest.

i just started julie powell's "julie & julia", thanks to melissa's recent recommendation. i've been in a cooking funk for a while now, that i'm hoping to not only be entertained, but inspired as well:)

Well...I have been on a reading binge lately, and recommend: Water for Elephants, The Nazi Officers Wife, and Waiting for Snow in Havana. Starting on Bel Canto next...
Best of luck finishing your night stand stack!!!

I'm reading "Reading Lolita in Tehran" by Azar Nafisi. It's sad and hopeful and frustrating, and it makes me so grateful to live where I do. I'm only 60 pages in, but I highly recommend it. I'm also reading "Middlesex," but I just can't get into it. It's interesting, but it just hasn't grabbed me.

Currently re-reading the Harry Potter series, before reading the last book for the first time. Also exciting things like "Services Marketing", "Strategic Marketing for Nonprofit Organizations", "Mission-based Marketing", and "Selling Out the Church: The Dangers of Church Marketing" (which is actually really good). Oh, the joys of student-hood... :)
